A recent article in Discover Magazine shows how the impact of traumatic experiences can be passed down through generations. We can epigenetically inherit our ancestor’s ‘molecular memory’. The article ‘Grandma’s Experiences Leave a Mark on Your Genes’ states, “According to the new insights of behavioral epigenetics, traumatic experiences in our past, or in our recent ancestors’ past, leave molecular scars adhering to our DNA. Jews whose great-grandparents were chased from their Russian shtetls; Chinese whose grandparents lived through the ravages of the Cultural Revolution; young immigrants from Africa whose parents survived massacres; adults of every ethnicity who grew up with alcoholic or abusive parents – all carry with them more than just memories.

Like silt deposited on the cogs of a finely tuned machine after the seawater of a tsunami recedes, our experiences and those or our forebears are never gone, even if they have been forgotten. They become a part of us, a molecular residue holding fast to our genetic scaffolding. The DNA remains the same, but psychological and behavioral tendencies are inherited. You might have inherited not just your grandmother’s knobby knees, but also her predisposition toward depression caused by the neglect she suffered as a newborn.”

Apparently it’s not enough that we have to deal with our own trauma, now we find we have to deal with Grandma’s trauma too! Ancestry, culture and karmic ties cast shadows upon us in many ways. Historical incidents of famine have affected the health of the children and grandchildren of those who suffered from restricted diets. Physical deprivation is only one way our DNA is affected. Our ancestors’ beliefs, feelings and attitudes also play a role. Prejudice is a learned behavior. Abuse, neglect, violence persist because we continue to teach what we have learned. Your ancestors’ beliefs and actions affect your beliefs and actions. Your genetic heritage is based on a whole lot more than the geography of your origins.

The good news is that you have the capability of “turning on” or “turning off” what genetics you have inherited. Bruce Lipton is a developmental biologist in the field of behavioral epigenetics. He is known for promoting the idea that genes and DNA can be manipulated by a person’s beliefs. He says, We are today beginning to see work by very reputable scientists that says the universe is created by our observations. It is not a coincidence; we are actively involved in physically shaping the world that we experience.”

In other words, we are always in a state of active manifestation. Manifestation is the physical display and presentation of your thoughts. It is the materialization, evidence and reflection of what you are thinking. Manifestation is proof – a visible reflection of the emotional and mental realms showing up in the physical world. It is the outward demonstration of your thoughts and beliefs about what you deserve and what you believe you are worthy of experiencing. It is a symptom of your thoughts – good and bad.

So, how do you help yourself to turn off the bad genes? One of the keys is to change your behavior. Remember, the science is behavioral epigenetics. Hypnotherapy is a very effective way to modify your perceptions and your behavior. Using the power of your subconscious mind, you can re-program yourself to make different choices in how you think and how you act and react. You can take control of your life right now.

Another way to turn off the bad genes is through energy healing and clearing of the luminous energy field. In the shamanic tradition, we energetically cut the cords that bind us to the negative experience of disease and fear. And in that process, we are able to elevate our ancestors to a place of esteem in order to benefit from their wisdom and teachings.

Consider this, you had no control over what happened to your ancestors. But you do you have control over what will happen to your descendants. Perhaps it’s time to cut away the ties that bind you to dis-ease and fear and set a new course for the future. It’s not too late.
